**Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions** Microsoft Windows versions prior to the fixed version Windows Vista SP2 Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1 Windows 7 SP1 Windows 8 Windows 8.1 Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2 Windows RT Gold and 8.1 **Description** The issue allows attackers to bypass an application sandbox protection mechanism and perform unspecified registry actions via a crafted application. An elevation of privilege exists in Microsoft Windows when it improperly allows certain registry interactions from within vulnerable sandboxed applications. An attacker who successfully exploited this vulnerability could improperly interact with the registry and attempt to escape the application sandbox. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker would have to convince the user to open a specially crafted file. The attacker could then run programs with the privileges of the logged on user. **Recommendations** For Windows Vista SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Windows 7 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Windows 8, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Windows 8.1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Windows RT Gold and 8.1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the registry to minimize the risk of exploitation. Avoid using the `CIERegistryHelper::SetSingleValue` function until a patch is available. Restrict the use of the `Microsoft Internet Explorer` application until the issue is resolved.
