Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft SQL Server (affected versions not specified)
Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE) (affected versions not specified)
Description
The issue is related to the xp showcolv function in SQL Server and MSDE, which does not properly restrict the length of a buffer before calling the srv paraminfo function in the SQL Server API for Extended Stored Procedures (XP). This allows an attacker to cause a denial of service or execute arbitrary commands.
Recommendations
For Microsoft SQL Server, update to a version that includes a fix for this issue.
For Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine (MSDE), update to a version that includes a fix for this issue.
As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the xp showcolv function until a patch is available.
Avoid using the srv paraminfo function in the SQL Server API for Extended Stored Procedures (XP) until the issue is resolved.
At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
