VetorAV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Microsoft Windows XP versions SP2 and SP3 Microsoft Windows Server 2003 version SP2 Microsoft Windows Vista versions SP1 and SP2 Microsoft Windows Server 2008 versions Gold, SP2, and R2 Microsoft Windows 7 (affected versions not specified)
Description The issue arises from the improper validation of fields in an SMB request by the SMB Server, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted SMB packet. This is an unauthenticated remote code execution vulnerability in the way that Microsoft Server Message Block (SMB) Protocol software handles specially crafted SMB packets. An attacker can exploit the vulnerability by sending a specially crafted network message to a computer running the Server service, potentially taking complete control of the system.
Recommendations For Microsoft Windows XP versions SP2 and SP3, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue. For Microsoft Windows Server 2003 version SP2, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue. For Microsoft Windows Vista versions SP1 and SP2, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue. For Microsoft Windows Server 2008 versions Gold, SP2, and R2, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue. For Microsoft Windows 7, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue. As a temporary workaround, consider disabling the SMB service until a patch is available. Restrict access to the SMB protocol to minimize the risk of exploitation.
