Description
The issue arises from the improper handling of executable files and shares during rename operations, allowing a remote code execution. This can be exploited by a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system.
Recommendations
For Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, update the operating system to a newer version.
For Windows 7 SP1, apply the necessary security patches.
For Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows RT 8.1, consider disabling the Windows Shell until a patch is available.
For Windows 10 versions 1511 through 1703, and Windows Server 2016, restrict access to the Windows Shell to minimize the risk of exploitation.
