Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Linux kernel versions prior to 5.12.0-rc4+
Description
The issue is related to the Linux kernel, specifically with the
hisi hns3 pmu driver. When tearing down a 'hisi hns3' PMU, the CPU hotplug callbacks are mistakenly run after the device has been unregistered, leading to a NULL pointer dereference. This can cause a kernel panic. The problem arises from the use of cpuhp state remove instance() instead of cpuhp state remove instance nocalls(), which allows notifiers to execute after the PMU device has been unregistered.Recommendations
To resolve the issue, use
cpuhp state remove instance nocalls() instead of cpuhp state remove instance() for the hisi hns3 pmu uninit process. As a temporary workaround, consider disabling the hisi hns3 pmu driver until a patch is available. Restrict access to the hisi hns3 pmu module to minimize the risk of exploitation. Avoid using the perf pmu migrate context function until the issue is resolved. At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
