| Vector | AV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:N/I:N/A:P |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Windows NT 4.0
Description
The issue allows remote malicious DNS servers to cause a denial of service by returning 0.0.0.0 as the IP address for a DNS host name lookup, which can lead to a system crash. This is due to a problem in the Netbt.sys component.
Recommendations
For Windows NT 4.0, consider restricting access to DNS host name lookups from untrusted sources until a fix is available. As a temporary workaround, implement additional validation for DNS responses to prevent the system from crashing when it encounters a response with an IP address of 0.0.0.0.
