| Vector | AV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:N/I:N/A:P |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions:
tcpdump (affected versions not specified)
Ethereal (affected versions not specified)
Description:
The issue allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service via malformed DNS packets. Specifically, when a jump offset refers to itself in a DNS packet, it causes the sniffer packages to enter an infinite loop while decompressing the packet.
Recommendations:
For tcpdump, consider disabling the DNS packet decompression feature until a patch is available.
For Ethereal, restrict access to the DNS packet analysis module to minimize the risk of exploitation.
At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
