Description
The issue arises from the kernfs xread function in kernfs, which fails to properly validate file offsets against negative 32-bit values resulting from truncation. This allows local users to read arbitrary kernel memory and potentially gain privileges through the lseek system call.
Recommendations
For NetBSD versions 1.6 through 2.1, update to a version that includes a fix for the kernfs xread function issue.
For OpenBSD version 3.8, update to a version that includes a fix for the kernfs xread function issue.
