Description
A privilege elevation issue exists in the Windows Shell, related to the detection and registration of new hardware. This could allow an authenticated user to gain complete control of the system. The issue is due to an unvalidated parameter to a function.

For Microsoft Windows XP SP2 and Professional, consider restricting access to the hardware detection functionality until a fix is available.
For Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP1, avoid using the hardware detection feature in the Windows Shell to minimize the risk of exploitation.
