Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Apple QuickTime versions prior to 7.6.8
Description
The issue is related to an untrusted search path vulnerability in the Picture Viewer component of Apple QuickTime. This vulnerability allows local users, and possibly remote attackers, to execute arbitrary code and conduct DLL hijacking attacks. The attack can be performed by placing a maliciously crafted DLL, such as
CoreVideo.dll, CoreGraphics.dll, or CoreAudioToolbox.dll, in the same folder as a .pic image file. When the image file is opened with QuickTime Picture Viewer, it may lead to arbitrary code execution.Recommendations
For Apple QuickTime versions prior to 7.6.8, update to version 7.6.8 or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the Picture Viewer component or avoiding opening image files from untrusted sources until the update is applied.
