CVE-2008-3431

CVSS v2.0

7.2

High

VectorAV:L/AC:L/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions VirtualBox versions prior to 1.6.4
Description The issue is related to insufficient input validation in the VBoxDrvNtDeviceControl function in VBoxDrv.sys. This function uses the METHOD NEITHER communication method for IOCTLs and does not properly validate a buffer associated with the Irp object. As a result, local users can gain privileges by opening the .VBoxDrv device and calling DeviceIoControl to send a crafted kernel address.
Recommendations For versions prior to 1.6.4, update to version 1.6.4 or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the .VBoxDrv device to minimize the risk of exploitation.
