CVE-2008-4264

CVSS v2.0

9.3

High

VectorAV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions: Microsoft Office Excel versions 2000 SP3 through 2007 SP1 Excel Viewer versions 2003 Gold through 2003 SP3 Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats versions Gold through SP1 Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac Open XML File Format Converter for Mac (affected versions not specified)
Description: A remote code execution issue exists due to pointer corruption when loading Excel formulas from a crafted Excel spreadsheet containing a malformed formula. This could allow an attacker to take complete control of an affected system if a user opens a specially crafted Excel file. The attacker could then install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights.
Recommendations: For Microsoft Office Excel versions 2000 SP3 through 2007 SP1, update to a version that is not affected by this issue. For Excel Viewer versions 2003 Gold through 2003 SP3, consider disabling the loading of formulas from external spreadsheets until a patch is available. For Office Compatibility Pack for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2007 File Formats versions Gold through SP1, restrict access to specially crafted Excel files to minimize the risk of exploitation. For Office 2004 and 2008 for Mac, and Open XML File Format Converter for Mac, at the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
