Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Symantec WinFax Pro version 10.03
Description
A stack-based buffer overflow issue exists in the Symantec.FaxViewerControl.1 ActiveX control, which is part of the WinFaxDCCFAXVW.DLL component. This issue can be exploited by remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on the affected system. The exploitation occurs when a long argument is passed to the
AppendFax method.Recommendations
For Symantec WinFax Pro version 10.03, consider disabling the
AppendFax method as a temporary workaround until a patch is available. Restrict access to the Symantec.FaxViewerControl.1 ActiveX control to minimize the risk of exploitation. At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this issue.Exploit
