CVE-2012-3523
CVSS v2.0
6.8
Medium
| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:P/I:P/A:P |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
INN versions prior to 2.5.3
Description
The issue is related to the STARTTLS implementation in nnrpd, which does not properly restrict I/O buffering. This allows man-in-the-middle attackers to insert commands into encrypted sessions by sending a cleartext command that is processed after TLS is in place. The attack is referred to as a "plaintext command injection" attack. Exploitation of this issue can lead to a violation of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of protected information and can be carried out remotely.
Recommendations
For versions prior to 2.5.3, update to version 2.5.3 or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the STARTTLS implementation in nnrpd to minimize the risk of exploitation.
