CVSS v2.0

9.3

High

VectorAV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Microsoft Windows Vista SP2 Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 Microsoft Office 2003 SP3 Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 and SP3 Microsoft Office 2010 Gold and SP1
Description A remote code execution issue exists in the way GDI+ handles validation of specially crafted EMF images. This could allow remote code execution if a user opens a specially crafted EMF image file. An attacker who successfully exploits this issue could take complete control of an affected system, then install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Users with fewer user rights on the system could be less impacted than users who operate with administrative user rights.
Recommendations For Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, apply the relevant security update to resolve the issue. For Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2, apply the relevant security update to resolve the issue. For Microsoft Office 2003 SP3, apply the relevant security update to resolve the issue. For Microsoft Office 2007 SP2 and SP3, apply the relevant security update to resolve the issue. For Microsoft Office 2010 Gold and SP1, apply the relevant security update to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting the use of GDI+ for handling EMF images until a patch is available.
