CVE-2014-6318
CVSS v2.0
4.3
Medium
| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:N/I:P/A:N |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Windows Vista SP2
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1
Microsoft Windows 7 SP1
Microsoft Windows 8
Microsoft Windows 8.1
Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2
Microsoft Windows RT Gold and 8.1
Description
The issue is related to the audit logon feature in Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) that does not properly log unauthorized login attempts when valid credentials are supplied. This makes it easier for remote attackers to bypass intended access restrictions via a series of attempts. The vulnerability could allow an attacker to bypass the audit logon security feature, although it does not allow arbitrary code execution by itself. However, it could be used in conjunction with another vulnerability.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, consider disabling the RDP feature until a patch is available.
For Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, restrict access to RDP to minimize the risk of exploitation.
For Microsoft Windows 7 SP1, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, and Windows RT Gold and 8.1, avoid using RDP for sensitive operations until the issue is resolved.
As a temporary workaround, consider implementing additional logging and monitoring measures to detect potential unauthorized access attempts.
