Description The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in the kernel-mode drivers, allowing local users to gain privileges via a crafted application. This can enable an attacker to install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full administrative rights. To exploit the issue, an attacker would first have to log on to the system.
Recommendations For Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 and R2 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Microsoft Windows 7 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Microsoft Windows 8, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Microsoft Windows 8.1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Microsoft Windows RT Gold and 8.1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the kernel-mode drivers until a patch is available.
