Description
The issue is related to errors in resource management within the win32k.sys component of the Windows operating system. This can be exploited by a local attacker to elevate privileges or cause a denial of service, resulting in memory corruption, by using a specially crafted application. The vulnerability exists because the Windows kernel-mode driver, win32k.sys, fails to properly free memory. An attacker who successfully exploits this vulnerability could execute arbitrary code within the context of another user, potentially allowing them to install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights.
Recommendations
For Windows Server 2003 SP2 and R2 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Windows Vista SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Windows 7 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Windows 8, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Windows 8.1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Windows RT Gold and 8.1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the win32k.sys driver to minimize the risk of exploitation.
