Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft PowerPoint versions 2007 SP3 through 2013 SP1
Microsoft Word versions 2007 SP3 through 2013 SP1
Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 RT SP1
Description
A remote code execution issue exists in Microsoft Office software due to improper handling of objects in memory. This can be exploited by opening a specially crafted file, allowing an attacker to run arbitrary code in the context of the current user. If the user has administrative rights, the attacker could gain complete control of the system, enabling them to install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in dynamic memory.
Recommendations
For Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 SP3, update to a version that properly handles objects in memory to prevent exploitation.
For Microsoft Word 2007 SP3, update to a version that properly handles objects in memory to prevent exploitation.
For Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 SP2, update to a version that properly handles objects in memory to prevent exploitation.
For Microsoft Word 2010 SP2, update to a version that properly handles objects in memory to prevent exploitation.
For Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 SP1, update to a version that properly handles objects in memory to prevent exploitation.
For Microsoft Word 2013 SP1, update to a version that properly handles objects in memory to prevent exploitation.
For Microsoft PowerPoint 2013 RT SP1, update to a version that properly handles objects in memory to prevent exploitation.
As a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of specially crafted Office documents until a patch is available.
