CVSS v2.0
9.3
High
| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Excel versions 2010 SP2 through 2016
Excel for Mac versions 2011 through 2016
Excel Services on SharePoint Server version 2013 SP1
Description
The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in Microsoft Excel and SharePoint Server, allowing a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code using a specially crafted Office document. This occurs when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits this issue could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system if the user has administrative rights. This could enable the attacker to install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Excel 2010 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Excel 2013 SP1 and Excel 2013 RT SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Excel 2016, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Excel for Mac 2011, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Excel 2016 for Mac, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Excel Services on SharePoint Server 2013 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
As a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of specially crafted Office documents until a patch is available.
