| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Office versions 2007 SP3 through 2016
Word Automation Services on SharePoint Server versions 2010 SP2 through 2013 SP1
Office Web Apps versions 2010 SP2 through 2013 SP1
SharePoint Server versions 2010 SP2 through 2013 SP1
Description
The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in Microsoft Office and SharePoint Server, allowing a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code using a specially crafted Office document. This occurs when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. Successful exploitation could allow an attacker to run arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system if the user has administrative rights. The attacker could then install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Exploitation requires a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Office versions 2007 SP3 through 2016, update to a version that is not affected by this issue.
For Word Automation Services on SharePoint Server versions 2010 SP2 through 2013 SP1, consider disabling the service until a patch is available.
For Office Web Apps versions 2010 SP2 through 2013 SP1, restrict access to the web apps to minimize the risk of exploitation.
For SharePoint Server versions 2010 SP2 through 2013 SP1, apply configuration changes to prevent the execution of arbitrary code.
At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
