| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Word versions 2007 SP3 through 2016
Office versions 2010 SP2
Word Viewer (affected versions not specified)
Description
The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in Microsoft Word, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document. This occurs when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits this could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system if the user has administrative rights. The attacker could then install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Exploitation requires a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Word 2007 SP3, update to a version that is not affected by this issue.
For Office 2010 SP2, apply the necessary patch or update to a newer version.
For Word 2013 SP1 and Word 2013 RT SP1, update to a version that includes the fix for this issue.
For Word 2016, apply the necessary security update or patch.
For Word Viewer, consider disabling the ability to open specially crafted documents until a patch is available.
As a temporary workaround, avoid opening suspicious or specially crafted Office documents with affected versions of Microsoft Office software.
