Description
The issue allows local users to cause a denial of service or obtain sensitive information from kernel memory, and possibly bypass the ASLR protection mechanism, via a crafted application. An information disclosure vulnerability exists in the Windows kernel-mode driver, caused by a NULL pointer dereference. This could allow an attacker to gain information about the system, which could then be combined with other attacks to compromise the system. The vulnerability by itself does not allow arbitrary code execution but could be used in conjunction with another vulnerability to bypass security features such as Address Space Layout Randomization (ASLR).
Recommendations
For Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Windows Vista SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Windows Server 2008 SP2 and R2 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Windows 7 SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Windows 8, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Windows 8.1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Windows Server 2012 Gold and R2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Windows RT Gold and 8.1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the kernel-mode driver to minimize the risk of exploitation.
