| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Excel versions 2007 SP3 through 2010 SP2
Office Compatibility Pack version SP3
Excel Services on SharePoint Server versions 2007 SP3 through 2010 SP2
Description
The issue is caused by a buffer overflow, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document. This occurs when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits this could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user. If the current user has administrative user rights, the attacker could take control of the affected system, installing programs, viewing, changing, or deleting data, or creating new accounts with full user rights. Exploitation requires a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Excel 2010 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Office Compatibility Pack SP3, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Excel Services on SharePoint Server 2007 SP3, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Excel Services on SharePoint Server 2010 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
As a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of specially crafted Office documents until a patch is available.
