CVE-2016-2817

CVSS v3.1

5.4

Medium

VectorAV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:L/I:L/A:N
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Mozilla Firefox versions prior to 46.0
Description The issue is related to the WebExtension sandbox feature in Mozilla Firefox, which does not properly restrict principal inheritance during API calls, specifically chrome.tabs.create and chrome.tabs.update. This allows remote attackers to conduct Universal XSS (UXSS) attacks via a crafted extension that accesses a javascript: or data: URL.
Recommendations For versions prior to 46.0, update to version 46.0 or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting the use of the chrome.tabs.create and chrome.tabs.update API calls in extensions until a patch is applied. Avoid using crafted extensions that access javascript: or data: URLs in affected versions.
