| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Office versions 2013 SP1, 2013 RT SP1, and 2016
Description
The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in Microsoft Office packages, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document. This occurs when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits the issue could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system if the user has administrative rights. This could enable the attacker to install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Exploitation requires a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Office versions 2013 SP1, 2013 RT SP1, and 2016, consider avoiding the use of crafted Office documents until a patch is available.
As a temporary workaround, restrict access to sensitive data and ensure users do not have administrative user rights when using the affected Microsoft Office software.
At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
