CVE-2016-3233

CVSS v2.0

9.3

High

VectorAV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Microsoft Excel versions 2007 SP3 through 2010 SP2 Office Compatibility Pack version SP3
Description The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack and Microsoft Excel, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document. This can occur when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits the issue could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system if the user has administrative rights. This could enable the attacker to install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Exploitation requires a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations For Microsoft Excel versions 2007 SP3 through 2010 SP2, update to a version that is not affected by this issue. For Office Compatibility Pack version SP3, update to a version that is not affected by this issue. As a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of crafted Office documents until a patch is available. Restrict access to sensitive data and systems to minimize the risk of exploitation, especially for users operating with administrative user rights.
