VectorAV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Microsoft Office versions 2010 SP2 Word versions 2010 SP2, 2013 SP1, 2013 RT SP1, 2016 Word for Mac versions 2011, 2016 Word Automation Services on SharePoint Server version 2010 SP2 Office Web Apps version 2010 SP2
Description The issue is caused by a buffer overflow and allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document. The vulnerability exists in Microsoft Office software when it fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits the vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker could take control of the affected system, install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Exploitation of the vulnerability requires that a user open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations For Microsoft Office 2010 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Word 2010 SP2, 2013 SP1, 2013 RT SP1, 2016, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Word for Mac 2011, 2016, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Word Automation Services on SharePoint Server 2010 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. For Office Web Apps 2010 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk. As a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of crafted Office documents until a patch is available.
