9.3
High
| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Edge versions prior to the fixed version
Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 9 through 11
Description
The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in the JScript 9, VBScript, and Chakra JavaScript engines used in Microsoft Edge and Internet Explorer. Exploitation of this issue may allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause a denial of service (memory corruption) via a specially crafted web site. The vulnerabilities could corrupt memory, enabling an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user. If the current user has administrative rights, an attacker could take control of the affected system, install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Edge, update to a version that includes the fix for this issue.
For Microsoft Internet Explorer versions 9 through 11, apply the recommended patch or update to a newer version that includes the fix.
As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the Chakra JavaScript engine or disabling the execution of scripts from untrusted sources until a patch is available.
