CVE-2016-3317
CVSS v2.0
9.3
High
| Vector | AV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Office versions 2010 SP2
Word versions 2007 SP3, 2010 SP2
Word for Mac versions 2011, 2016
Word Viewer (affected versions not specified)
Description
The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office, and Word Viewer, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted file. This occurs when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits the issue could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system if the user has administrative rights. The attacker could then install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Exploitation requires a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Office 2010 SP2, update to a version that fixes the memory corruption issue.
For Word 2007 SP3, consider disabling the ability to open specially crafted files until a patch is available.
For Word 2010 SP2, restrict access to files from untrusted sources to minimize the risk of exploitation.
For Word for Mac 2011 and 2016, avoid opening files from unknown sources until the issue is resolved.
For Word Viewer, as a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of the viewer for files from untrusted sources until a fix is available.
