Description
The issue is caused by a buffer overflow in memory, allowing a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code using a specially crafted document. Exploitation requires a user to open the crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software. If the current user has administrative user rights, an attacker could take control of the affected system, install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Excel versions 2007 SP3 through 2016, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue.
For Office Compatibility Pack version SP3, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue.
For Excel Viewer, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue.
For Excel Services on SharePoint Server versions 2007 SP3 through 2013 SP1, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue.
For Office Online Server, update to a newer version that contains a fix for this issue.
As a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of specially crafted files with affected versions of Microsoft Office software until a patch is available.
