CVE-2016-7230

CVSS v2.0

9.3

High

VectorAV:N/AC:M/Au:N/C:C/I:C/A:C
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Microsoft PowerPoint versions 2010 SP2 Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer version not specified Microsoft Office Web Apps versions 2010 SP2
Description The issue is caused by a memory corruption flaw that allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document. This can occur when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits the issue could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system if the user has administrative rights. The attacker could then install programs, view, change, or delete data, or create new accounts with full user rights. Exploitation requires a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations For Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 SP2, update to a version that fixes the memory corruption issue. For Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer, consider disabling the ability to open specially crafted files until a patch is available. For Microsoft Office Web Apps 2010 SP2, restrict access to specially crafted documents to minimize the risk of exploitation. As a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of affected Microsoft Office software to open untrusted files until a patch is available.
