Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Microsoft Excel versions 2007 SP3 through 2016
Microsoft Excel for Mac versions 2011 through 2016
Office Compatibility Pack version SP3
Description
The issue is caused by a memory corruption vulnerability in Microsoft Excel and the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack, allowing remote attackers to execute arbitrary code via a crafted Office document. This occurs when the Office software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploits the vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user, potentially taking control of the affected system if the user has administrative rights. Exploitation requires a user to open a specially crafted file with an affected version of Microsoft Office software.
Recommendations
For Microsoft Excel 2007 SP3, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Excel 2010 SP2, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Excel 2013 SP1 and Excel 2013 RT SP1, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Excel 2016, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Excel for Mac 2011, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Microsoft Excel 2016 for Mac, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
For Office Compatibility Pack SP3, update to a newer version to mitigate the risk.
As a temporary workaround, consider avoiding the use of specially crafted documents until a patch is available.
