CVE-2016-2109

CVSS v2.0

7.8

High

VectorAV:N/AC:L/Au:N/C:N/I:N/A:C
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions OpenSSL versions prior to 1.0.1t OpenSSL versions prior to 1.0.2h
Description The issue is related to the asn1 d2i read bio function in the ASN.1 BIO implementation, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service due to memory consumption via a short invalid encoding. This is caused by errors in resource management. The vulnerability could also lead to a heap-based buffer overflow due to improper bounds checking by the EVP EncodeUpdate function, potentially allowing a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code or cause the application to crash.
Recommendations For OpenSSL versions prior to 1.0.1t, update to version 1.0.1t or later to resolve the issue. For OpenSSL versions prior to 1.0.2h, update to version 1.0.2h or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the vulnerable asn1 d2i read bio function until a patch is available. Avoid using the EVP EncodeUpdate function with overly long arguments until the issue is resolved.
