Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Linux kernel versions through 4.17.2
Description
The issue is related to the Linux kernel's page allocator not yielding CPU resources to the owner of the oom lock mutex. This can allow a local unprivileged user to lock up the system forever by wasting CPU resources from the page allocator, for example, via concurrent page fault events, when the global OOM killer is invoked. The software maintainer has not accepted certain proposed patches due to the viewpoint that the underlying problem is non-trivial to handle.
Recommendations
For Linux kernel versions through 4.17.2, consider applying configuration changes to minimize the risk of exploitation, such as adjusting system settings to prevent concurrent page fault events from causing a system lockup. However, at the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this issue.
