| Vector | AV:L/AC:L/PR:L/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Linux Kernel versions prior to 4.11.5
Description
The issue is caused by a minimal memory range between the upper boundary of the stack and the PIE binary segment in memory, starting at 0x40000000. This can be exploited by a local attacker to access the stack protection page. The vulnerability allows a PIE binary to be executed with a large amount of arguments or environmental strings, causing the stack to occupy the address 0x80000000 and the PIE binary to be mapped above 0x40000000, nullifying the protection. This issue appears to be limited to i386-based systems.
Recommendations
For Linux Kernel versions prior to 4.11.5, update to a version that contains a fix for this issue to prevent exploitation.
At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
