CVE-2016-7937
CVSS v3.1
9.8
Critical
| Vector | AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
tcpdump versions prior to 4.9.0
Description
The issue is related to a buffer overflow in the VAT parser, specifically in the
vat print() function within print-udp.c. Additionally, there's a mention of a buffer overflow caused by improper bounds checking by the ISO CLNS parser in the clnp print() function within print-isoclns.c. This could potentially allow a remote attacker to overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system or cause the application to crash by sending an overly long argument.Recommendations
For versions prior to 4.9.0, update to version 4.9.0 or later to resolve the buffer overflow issue in the VAT parser and the ISO CLNS parser.
As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the
vat print() and clnp print() functions until a patch is available.Exploit
