CVE-2016-7983
CVSS v3.1
9.8
Critical
| Vector | AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
tcpdump versions prior to 4.9.0
Description
The issue is related to buffer overflows in tcpdump, specifically in the BOOTP parser and the ISO CLNS parser. The buffer overflow in the BOOTP parser occurs in the
bootp print() function in print-bootp.c. Another buffer overflow is caused by improper bounds checking by the ISO CLNS parser in the clnp print() function in print-isoclns.c. This could allow a remote attacker to overflow a buffer and execute arbitrary code on the system or cause the application to crash by sending an overly long argument.Recommendations
For versions prior to 4.9.0, update to version 4.9.0 or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the
bootp print() and clnp print() functions until a patch is available. Avoid using the affected API endpoints or functions that may trigger the buffer overflow until the issue is resolved.Exploit
