Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Java SE versions 6u191, 7u181, 8u172, and 10.0.1
Java SE Embedded version 8u171
Description
The issue allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access via multiple protocols to compromise Java SE or Java SE Embedded, resulting in unauthorized read access to a subset of accessible data. This requires human interaction from a person other than the attacker. The vulnerability applies to Java deployments that load and run untrusted code, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets, and rely on the Java sandbox for security.
Recommendations
For Java SE versions 6u191, 7u181, 8u172, and 10.0.1, update to a version that includes the fix for this issue.
For Java SE Embedded version 8u171, update to a version that includes the fix for this issue.
As a temporary workaround, consider restricting the use of the Java Attach API to prevent attackers from connecting to an Eclipse OpenJ9 or IBM JVM on the same machine and using Attach API operations to gain elevated privileges.
At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability in Eclipse OpenJ9.
