Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Java SE versions 6u191, 7u181, 8u172, 10.0.1
Java SE Embedded version 8u171
Description
A difficult to exploit vulnerability allows an unauthenticated attacker with network access via SSL/TLS to compromise Java SE, Java SE Embedded. Successful attacks can result in unauthorized creation, deletion, or modification access to critical data or all Java SE, Java SE Embedded accessible data. This issue applies to Java deployments that load and run untrusted code and rely on the Java sandbox for security, typically in clients running sandboxed Java Web Start applications or sandboxed Java applets.
Recommendations
For Java SE versions 6u191, 7u181, 8u172, and 10.0.1, update to a version that fixes this issue.
For Java SE Embedded version 8u171, update to a version that fixes this issue.
As a temporary workaround, consider restricting the use of Java Attach API to connect to an Eclipse OpenJ9 or IBM JVM on the same machine and use Attach API operations to only the process owner.
Restrict access to the JSSE component to minimize the risk of exploitation.
