CVE-2018-20651

CVSS v3.1

5.5

Medium

VectorAV:L/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions GNU Binutils version 2.31.1
Description A NULL pointer dereference was discovered in the elf link add object symbols function in the Binary File Descriptor (BFD) library, which is part of GNU Binutils. This issue occurs when processing a specially crafted ELF file of type ET DYN with no program headers, allowing remote attackers to cause a denial of service.
Recommendations For GNU Binutils version 2.31.1, consider avoiding the use of the elf link add object symbols function until a patch is available. As a temporary workaround, restrict the processing of ELF files to minimize the risk of exploitation. At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
