Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
libxml2 version 2.9.10
Description
The issue is related to an infinite loop in the libxml2 library, which can be triggered by a specially crafted XML file. This can cause a denial of service when the file is processed, potentially allowing a remote attacker to disrupt service. The problem is associated with the xmlStringLenDecodeEntities function in parser.c, where an infinite loop can occur in certain end-of-file situations.
Recommendations
For libxml2 version 2.9.10, consider disabling the xmlStringLenDecodeEntities function in parser.c as a temporary workaround until a patch is available. Restrict access to the vulnerable library to minimize the risk of exploitation. Avoid using the libxml2 library to parse untrusted XML files until the issue is resolved. At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
