CVE-2018-18497
CVSS v3.1
6.5
Medium
| Vector | AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N |
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions:
Firefox versions prior to 64
Description:
The issue is related to a bypass of limitations on URIs allowed to WebExtensions by the browser.windows.create API. This can occur when a pipe in the URL field is used within the extension to load multiple pages as a single argument, potentially allowing a malicious WebExtension to open privileged about: or file: locations. This could enable a remote attacker to access confidential data.
Recommendations:
For Firefox versions prior to 64, update to version 64 or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting the use of the browser.windows.create API within extensions to minimize the risk of exploitation. Avoid using the API to load multiple pages as a single argument until the issue is resolved.
