Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
Cisco NX-OS Software versions prior to 8.3(1)
Description
A vulnerability in the implementation of a specific CLI command could allow an authenticated, local attacker with administrator credentials to cause a buffer overflow condition or perform command injection, allowing the execution of arbitrary commands with elevated privileges on the underlying operating system of an affected device. The vulnerability is due to insufficient validation of arguments passed to a certain CLI command. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability by including malicious input as the argument of the affected CLI command. A successful exploit could allow the attacker to execute arbitrary commands on the underlying operating system with root privileges.
Recommendations
For versions prior to 8.3(1), update to version 8.3(1) or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the affected CLI command until a patch is available. Avoid using malicious input as arguments to the affected CLI command to minimize the risk of exploitation.
Fix
OS Command Injection
Buffer Overflow
