CVE-2022-38392

CVSS v3.1

5.3

Medium

VectorAV:P/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:N/I:N/A:H
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Hard drives (affected versions not specified)
Description Certain 5400 RPM hard drives, commonly found in laptops and PCs manufactured around 2005 and later, are susceptible to a denial-of-service condition. This occurs due to a resonant-frequency attack triggered by the audio signal within Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” music video. The resonant frequency can cause device malfunction and system crashes. A specific affected product is the Seagate STDT4000100 763649053447. The attack requires physical proximity to the affected device. The issue stems from the song containing a natural resonant frequency for certain 5400 RPM hard drive models. In some instances, the issue could affect nearby machines even without direct playback on those devices. Researchers have demonstrated that reproducing sound at a frequency of 130 Hz can cause a hard drive to become unresponsive. Acoustic attacks on hard drives have the potential to disrupt PCs, ATMs, and surveillance systems.
Recommendations At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
