CVE-2022-38392

CVSS v3.1
5.3
VectorAC:L/AV:P/A:H/C:N/I:N/PR:N/S:C/UI:N

**Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions:**

Hard drives (affected versions not specified)

**Description:**

Certain 5400 RPM hard drives, as shipped with laptop PCs approximately from 2005 onwards, are susceptible to a denial-of-service condition. This occurs through a resonant-frequency attack initiated by the audio signal within Janet Jackson’s “Rhythm Nation” music video. The resonant frequencies within the song can cause malfunctions and system crashes in vulnerable hard drives. The attack is effective even when the music video is played on a nearby device, potentially affecting systems without direct audio output. This issue stems from the song containing frequencies that match the natural resonant frequencies of certain 5400 RPM hard drive models.

**Recommendations:**

At the moment, there is no information about a newer version that contains a fix for this vulnerability.
