CVSS v3.1

5.9

Medium

VectorAV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:N/I:N/A:H
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions Juniper Networks Junos OS versions 21.3 through 21.3R3-S2 Juniper Networks Junos OS versions 21.4 through 21.4R2-S2, 21.4R3 Juniper Networks Junos OS versions 22.1 through 22.1R1-S2, 22.1R3 Juniper Networks Junos OS versions 22.2 through 22.2R2 Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved version 21.3R1-EVO through 21.4R3-EVO Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved versions 22.1 through 22.1R1-S2-EVO, 22.1R3-EVO Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved versions 22.2 through 22.2R2-EVO
Description The issue is related to the improper handling of an unexpected data type in the processing of EVPN routes on Juniper Networks Junos OS and Junos OS Evolved. An attacker in direct control of a BGP client connected to a route reflector, or via a machine in the middle (MITM) attack, can send a specific EVPN route contained within a BGP Update, triggering a routing protocol daemon (RPD) crash, leading to a Denial of Service (DoS) condition. This issue only occurs on BGP route reflectors, only within a BGP EVPN multicast environment, and only when one or more BGP clients have leave-sync-route-oldstyle enabled.
Recommendations For Juniper Networks Junos OS versions 21.3 through 21.3R3-S2, update to version 21.3R3-S2 or later. For Juniper Networks Junos OS versions 21.4 through 21.4R2-S2, 21.4R3, update to version 21.4R2-S2 or later. For Juniper Networks Junos OS versions 22.1 through 22.1R1-S2, 22.1R3, update to version 22.1R1-S2 or later. For Juniper Networks Junos OS versions 22.2 through 22.2R2, update to version 22.2R2 or later. For Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved version 21.3R1-EVO through 21.4R3-EVO, update to version 21.4R3-EVO or later. For Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved versions 22.1 through 22.1R1-S2-EVO, 22.1R3-EVO, update to version 22.1R1-S2-EVO or later. For Juniper Networks Junos OS Evolved versions 22.2 through 22.2R2-EVO, update to version 22.2R2-EVO or later. As a temporary workaround, consider disabling the leave-sync-route-oldstyle option on BGP clients to minimize the risk of exploitation.
