Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
The Simple Download Counter plugin for WordPress versions up to, and including, 1.6
Description
The issue is related to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the plugin's shortcodes due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping on user-supplied attributes like
before and after. This allows authenticated attackers with contributor-level permissions and above to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page.Recommendations
For versions up to, and including, 1.6, consider disabling the shortcodes feature until a patch is available to prevent exploitation. Restrict access to the
before and after attributes to minimize the risk of arbitrary web script injection. Update to a version that includes the necessary input sanitization and output escaping fixes for the shortcodes.Fix
