Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions
The Ultimate Video Player For WordPress versions prior to 2.2.3
Description
The issue is related to a lack of proper capability check when updating settings via a REST route, allowing users with Contributor and above roles to update them. Additionally, due to the lack of escaping in one of the settings, this also enables Stored XSS attacks. It is estimated that over 100,000 WordPress sites are potentially affected. Attackers can exploit this to potentially lead to Admin Account Creation.
Recommendations
For versions prior to 2.2.3, update to version 2.2.3 or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the REST route used for updating settings to minimize the risk of exploitation. Avoid using the vulnerable setting until the issue is resolved.
