CVE-2024-36498

CVSS v3.1

4.7

Medium

VectorAV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:R/S:C/C:N/I:L/A:N
Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions SoftwareX versions prior to 7.40
Description The issue is due to missing input sanitization, allowing an attacker to perform cross-site-scripting attacks and run arbitrary Javascript in the browser of other users. The "Edit Disclaimer Text" function of the configuration menu is vulnerable to stored XSS. This function is available at the URL "https://$SCANNER/cgi/admin.cgi?-rdisclaimer+-apre" and can be used by the users Poweruser and Admin. The stored Javascript payload will be executed every time the ScanWizard is loaded, even in the Kiosk-mode browser.
Recommendations For versions prior to 7.40, update to version 7.40 or later to mitigate the risk, but be aware that the fix in version 7.40 could be bypassed via URL-encoding the Javascript payload again. As a temporary workaround, consider restricting access to the "Edit Disclaimer Text" function to minimize the risk of exploitation. Additionally, avoid using the https://$SCANNER/cgi/admin.cgi?-rdisclaimer+-apre endpoint until the issue is fully resolved.
