Name of the Vulnerable Software and Affected Versions:
Linux kernel versions prior to 6.6.58
Description:
The issue is related to the removal of LED entries from the LEDs list when unregistering. A specific scenario where the port for the PHY is torn down and up, and the kmod for the PHY is removed, can cause a kernel panic. This happens because the LED list is not correctly updated, resulting in duplicate entries. The problem occurs when the port is set down for the second time after the kmod is re-added and the port is put up again. The LED list then contains previously unregistered elements, leading to a kernel panic.
Recommendations:
For Linux kernel versions prior to 6.6.58, update to version 6.6.58 or later to resolve the issue. As a temporary workaround, consider disabling the removal of LED entries from the LEDs list when unregistering to prevent kernel panic. However, this is not a recommended long-term solution, and updating to a fixed version is the best course of action.
